Chapter Ten
By the time Ernie returned home after dropping Bob and Emma off, it was just after three oâclock. He had already told Bob not to bother going into the office that morning as he intended having a lie in. Within minutes of getting home he was in bed and expecting to go straight to sleep, but his blood was still saturated with adrenalin and he lay there for a long time whilst his mind replayed everything that had happened. He didnât know how close heâd been to getting caught, but he imagined what would have happened if he had been handed over to unsavoury characters and tortured.
He did drop off to sleep eventually. More accurately, his body went to sleep. His mind continued to replay events, not as they had happened, but as they may have happened. He dreamt about telling his torturers Bob and Emma had been with him, and seeing them caught and tortured too. In his imagination, Emma was being threatened with a drill unless Bob answered their questions, and every time he refused they moved the drill towards the side of Emmaâs face. Ernie could clearly hear the buzzing of the drill as they moved it ever closer.
Ernie screamed, and woke up with a start covered in sweat. It took him a few seconds to realise the buzzing sound was not coming from an electric drill. His second thought was that it was coming from his phone. Heâd told Emma not to disturb him before mid-day, and whatever she found on the laptop could wait until heâd had a good nights rest. He thought it was mid-day when he heard the buzzer, but then realised the sound was coming from his front door intercom. Looking at his watch, he saw it was only eleven. Ignoring the buzzer, he turned over. Whoever it was could wait.
Except they couldnât, and the buzzer kept sounding.
Eventually, Ernie dragged himself out of bed and answered the intercom system. âYes! Who is it?â
âSorry to disturb you Mister Wright. Itâs Detective Inspector Sarah Carter.â
For a moment, Ernie didnât know how to respond. He wondered if she knew he had broken into a house, but didnât see how she could know. âCome in,â he said. âIâll be with you in a moment.â
He pressed the button to unlock the outer door, returned to his bedroom to grab his dressing gown and slippers, and by the time he opened the door of his flat the detective inspector was already there waiting for him. Heâd learnt his lesson since last time she had called. When he had returned home in the early hours of the morning, he had put Annâs clothes away, so at least they were not strewn all over the bedroom.
âCome in,â he said again. âSorry for how Iâm dressed, but I had a bit of a late night last night so I was having a lie in this morning.â
Sarah followed him into the living room and helped herself to a seat without being asked.
